Spring Is On The Way: Nature Bulletin 26/02/2024

I think we are all ready for some Spring fresh air, some outdoor activities and lighter mornings and evenings. March is on its way later this week and though March is known as the month with one foot in winter and one foot in spring, March is the month of the daffodil, which to me is synonymous with Spring!

The birds are currently extremely busy! If you don't already feed the birds in your garden, now is a great time to start! Late winter and early spring is breeding season and our garden birds will need to build condition if they are to breed successfully this year.

Did you know?

According to some research from Songbird Survival more than half of our native songbirds are in decline! In fact 48% of all UK bird species are in decline, with woodland species affected the most. It is estimated that we have lost 38 million birds from our UK skies in just 50 years!

The very least we can do to support our birds is place a feeder or two in our outdoor spaces and give our feathered friends a boost!

If you provide a seed mix with a selection of different seeds, this will increase the diversity of species that will turn up to your table to dine. It is worth noting that blackbirds can't crack the outer husks of some seeds, so providing the husk free seed mix not only prevents mess, it also enables blackbirds to feed. The bonus of this is that theres is also minimal mess in the garden.

If you are an office-based business, why not pop a bird feeder on or outside your windows?

So who is singing at the moment and why?

Blackbirds are the undisputed musical leads of most birdsong heard at this time of year. It is mostly the males singing to attract a mate, however females do occasionally contribute in response to their song.

In woodland, you may be lucky enough to hear the tap-tap-tap of the woodpecker. He too is working hard to attract a mate, warning rivals away from their territory.

Interesting Fact!

There are three species of woodpecker in the UK; the greater spotted woodpecker, the lesser spotted woodpecker and the green woodpecker. The lesser spotted woodpecker, unfortunately, the UK's fastest declining woodland bird species.

Did You Know?

The crocus that can be seen at this time of year peeking its flower head above ground through grasses and woodland undergrowth was introduced to the UK as a source of saffron from the stamens. Saffron was used in the Roman period for dying clothing!
